Hike through the rice paddies, get familiar with Balinese living. After a late lunch proceed to Ubud and to your hotel. Evening at leisure. SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE: Authentic Balinese Life Experience (No Balinese Healer) Start off the day with a visit to the market of Gianyar, a city just 10 kilometers northeast of the glitz of Ubud, but decades away in time. It’s a flight of imagination back into the mystery and magic of the East. A stroll on the local market is one of the most enjoyable ways to connect with the foundations of a culture that goes back several thousands of years is a visit to a local market. It is the place where families gather to eat delicacies such as roast pig, sweet cakes, chicken and coconut balls, fried bananas and tempeh and tofu — all aglow and golden atop of mobile kitchens on wheels that are ferried from other places. The distinction between scores of temporary and permanent food stalls become rather thin. However, they all cook up a mouth-watering and a jawdropping range of dishes. There’s everything from babi guling (spit-roasted pig with chilli, turmeric, garlic and ginger) to succulent combinations of vegetables that defy description. Much of the fun is just strolling along. Then you head towards the mountains. A short hike spans the distance between the temple at the outer border of the village to its center. You’ll be thrilled by magnificent views surrounding rice terraces. Depending on the time of the year, harvesting or planting of rice will unfold before your eyes. Occasionally a Balinese farmer will give you his most welcoming smile. Spot the small shrines in the middle of a rice field, dedicated to the Goddess of Fertility. Not a day will pass by without a delicate offering placed on its top. Experience first handed how a typical Balinese family lives and observe the traditional rules to build a house compound. They are amazingly defined by a set of philosophical rules, steeped in Balinese Hinduism. A village lady is engaged in the art of making temple offerings. Creating these apparent simple gifts to the Gods, is part of the daily routine of the Balinese. After lunch, you will walk through the village and learn more about traditional house architecture. The most important part is the house temple, inevitably pointing towards the mountains. It is amazing how Balinese keep their buildings consistently in line with religious principles. Then it is back to your hotel, after a day full of quintessential Balinese experiences.

From Ubud you will drive via rural routes and there will be included to visit Gunung Kawi and Tirta Empul Temple. Return to Ubud and lunch at local restaurant near the monkey forest. After lunch walk through the monkey forest and return to the hotel, rest of the afternoon at leisure.

SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE:

Tirta Empul

All Balinese will make regular pilgrimages to Tirta Empul. They come seeking to cleanse themselves spiritually and to cure their physical ailments by bathing in the holy springs, which have been considered the most sacred in Bali ever since the tenth century, if not longer. The shallow red-brick bathing pools are sunk into the ground of the outer courtyard of a temple, fed by water from the springs in the inner sanctuary. Men, women and priests each have their own segregated sections in which to immerse them¬selves, though most modern devotees just splash their faces and smile for the camera.

Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi refers to a site of a series of 11th century tombs cut out from the rock face. To reach it, you have to walk down a steep flight of some three hundred steps, through a massive rock-hewn archway, all the way to the sacred Pakrisan River. It`s an impressive spot, completely enshrined in a lush valley. There are lots of theories about the origins and function of the Gunung Kawi tombs or candi, as they are also considered as sacred temples. Most probably they were erected as memorials to kings from a long lost era – possibly the 11th century – and their queens. Before crossing the river, turn sharp left for the Queens` Tombs, a series of four huge, square-tiered reliefs, chiseled from the riverside cliff face to resemble temple facades. After crossing the Pakrisan River, you enter the actual Gunung Kawi temple complex, which contains an unusual cloister, complete with courtyard, rooms and cells, entirely cut from the ravine rock wall. This was probably built for the holy men who looked after the five royal tombs at the back of the temple complex. These are in better condition than the Queens` Tombs, and you can see the false doors and facades quite clearly defined.

Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud`s best-known tourist attraction is its The Monkey Forest Sanctuary occupies the land between the southern end of Monkey Forest Road and the northern edge of the wood-carvers` hamlet of Nyuhkuning. It is one of Ubud`s best-known attraction, with a colony of malevolent but photogenic monkeys. The forest itself is traversed by a concrete pathway. The only way to see the Monkey Forest is on foot, but it`s not a strenuous hike. Five minutes into the forest, you`ll come to Pura Dalem Agung Padang Tegal , the temple of the dead for the banjar of Padang Tegal. Pura dalem are traditionally places of extremely strong magical power and the preserve of leyak or evil spirits. In this temple you`ll find half a dozen stone carved images of the witch-widow Rangda. She guards the main stairway, immediately recognizable by her hideous fanged face, unkempt hair, lolling tongue and pendulous breasts. Two of the Rangda statues are depicted in the process of devouring children Casual visitors are not allowed to enter the inner sanctuary, but in the outer courtyard you can see the ornate kulkul drum tower, built in red brick and decorated with carvings of Bhoma heads and garuda.

Day 6, Mon Sep 24 2018 A Journey to The Religious Centre of the Island (B,L,D)

After breakfast depart to eastern part of Bali. First visit Besakih temple and lunch at local restaurant. After lunch visit Kehen temple before return to your hotel in Ubud area. Rest of the day free at leisure. SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE: Besakih Temple The renowned temple of Besakih is built against the southern slope of Gunung Agung, a violent yet sacred mountain for the Balinese. A sprawling complex of shrines, dedicated to an unknown number of gods, constitutes the religious center of Bali. On ominous days, Besakih brims with colorful activity. Row after row, women climb the temple stairs, proudly carrying a heavy load of flower and fruit offerings. They are meant to stabilize the Universe or to finalize a complicated religious ceremony. Besakih and surroundings can easily be described as the holiest place on the island, covering an extended religious patchwork of shrines and temples, dedicated to kings and Gods. At any given time, you`ll walk together with numerous pilgrims as every Balinese is required to pay homage several times throughout the year. Kehen Temple The ancient and much revered Pura Kehen, 1.500m north of the town of Bangli, rises up steeply from the road in terraces lined with religious statues. Sporting several remarkably fierce Bhoma leering above fabulously carved doors, the great entrance leads into the outer courtyard containing a massive banyan tree with a kulkul tower built among the branches. A small compound, guarded by naga under a frangipani tree, contains a stone that is supposed to have glowed with fire when the site of the temple was decided. Steps lead up to the middle courtyard, from where you can look into the inner courtyard, with its eleven-roofed meru dedicated to Siwa. The word `kehen` is derived from “keren” meaning `flame`.

The landmark temple was built to commemorate the spread of Hinduism from Java to Bali many centuries ago. Sitting on an eroded rocky outcrop between the sea and the beach, it is quite a sight. The temple, consisting of several shrines protected by poisonous black snakes, is fairly modest but as the tide rushes in and the islet becomes completely surrounded by water, the place becomes a mysterious spot. Pupuan Beautiful roads lead along the slopes of mighty mountains towards the north coast. As the road winds up higher, your eyes will meet stunning views of rice terraces, carved out delicately in the slopes of misty mountains. In many places you will see coffee, cloves and vanilla drying at the side of the road. Trekking at Belimbing Village Near Belimbing village, walking through a succession of superb rice terraces really gives you an idea of what Bali is all about. You possible witness all the stages of rice cultivation, from seeding to harvesting. Small, grey shrines with a bright flower on them, worship the Godess of Rice. This place is more then just a tourist attraction as it is still a place of worship. The views on the hills surrounding Lovina are extraordinary. The terraced complex has a few praying rooms with golden Buddha’s. On the highest level of the complex you find a stupa, almost like a small version of the Borobudur in Java. It effortlessly combines Hindu and Buddhist elements into a unique sample of Balinese temple architecture The location on the shore of the giant lake effectively filling a crater formed thousands of years ago by a seismic blast of an extinct volcano, is significant. The lake supplies most of the drinkable water to large areas of Bali. Dense pine forests tumble down the slopes of Mount Bratan to the calm shoreline dotted with holy shrines.

Jatiluwih

A startlingly beautiful area of verdant, terraced rice paddies nestled in the shadow of Mount Batukaru, the second highest peak of Bali and one of the holiest In 2007 this area was nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Taman Ayun Temple

Located in Mengwi, the 17th century royal temple sheds a magnificent light on the principles of traditional Balinese temple architecture. Very few other temples were constructed along such `ideal` lines. Three terraces blend harmoniously into one another, each of them representing different worlds, dedicated to the Negative and Positive Forces in the universe and the relationship between both. Candi bentars, the typical Balinese split temple gates, separate them from one another. The complex is surrounded by a beautiful pond, adding to the elegance of the place. The last and highest court, dedicated to the Gods, is only accessible for Hindus, but by walking around, you have an excellent view on the meru`s with their uneven roofs, a quintessential element of Balinese architecture
